What is Osteopathy?
A Holistic Path to Wellbeing
Osteopathic Care in Sydney — Assessment, Treatment & Management
Osteopathy is a form of hands-on allied healthcare focused on the relationship between your body's structure and its overall function. It is founded on the principle that the body is a unified, self-regulating system in which optimal structure and free movement support the body’s innate capacity for well-being and healing.
While the word 'osteo' refers to bone, osteopathy is a whole-body musculoskeletal approach to healthcare, considering how your bones, muscles, joints, fascia, and nerves work together as one integrated system. Osteopaths use a range of hands-on techniques aimed at improving mobility, reducing musculoskeletal pain, and supporting the body's capacity for self-regulation within its musculoskeletal systems.
Osteopathy in Australia is a university-trained, government-registered allied health profession regulated by the Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency (AHPRA).

What to Expect in Your Osteopathy Consultation
Your first osteopathic consultation is a comprehensive session designed to give Max a thorough understanding of your musculoskeletal health. It begins with an in-depth case history, exploring your current symptoms, your physical history, your daily activities, and any contributing lifestyle factors. A detailed physical assessment follows, including postural analysis, range of motion testing, and hands-on palpation to establish a working diagnosis.
Follow-up appointments focus on reassessing your progress and adapting your management plan in response to how your body is responding. Further manual therapy, dry needling, or shockwave therapy sessions may be provided as appropriate. Throughout your care, Max prioritises education, helping you understand your condition and build the knowledge and tools for long-term musculoskeletal health.
FAQs
-
It’s a great question. All three are AHPRA-registered allied health professions that assess and manage musculoskeletal conditions, and there is genuine overlap between them. Osteopaths take a whole-body musculoskeletal approach, assessing how different regions of the body may be contributing to your symptoms, rather than treating only the area of pain in isolation. Osteopaths use a wide range of manual therapy techniques, including soft tissue work, joint mobilisation, and manipulation, alongside dry needling and shockwave therapy where indicated. The right choice often comes down to finding a practitioner whose approach and communication style you connect with.

Every person and every condition is different. During your initial consultation, Max will conduct a thorough assessment and provide you with an honest outline of the management plan, including an estimate of the number of sessions that may be required to achieve your goals. His approach prioritises equipping you with the understanding and tools to manage your condition independently, rather than creating long-term dependency on treatment.
-
No referral is required to see an osteopath; you can book directly online. However, if your GP has issued you a Chronic Disease Management (CDM) plan, you may be eligible for a Medicare rebate on up to five allied health consultations per calendar year. It is worth discussing this with your GP if you have an ongoing musculoskeletal condition

Yes, osteopathic consultations are covered under the ancillary ('extras') cover of most major Australian private health funds. HICAPS is available at all three clinics, meaning you can claim your rebate on the spot and only pay the gap. The amount of your rebate will depend on your fund and level of cover; we recommend checking with your insurer directly.
-
Shockwave therapy (ESWT) is a non-invasive treatment that uses focused acoustic waves to address chronic musculoskeletal tendon and soft tissue conditions. Clinical evidence supports its use in the management of conditions including plantar fasciitis, Achilles tendinopathy, tennis elbow, and calcific shoulder tendinopathy, among others. Max will conduct a thorough clinical assessment at your initial consultation to determine whether shockwave therapy is appropriate for your specific presentation. It is available at all three Sydney clinics.
-
Dry needling is a musculoskeletal technique that involves inserting fine sterile needles into myofascial trigger points to address musculoskeletal pain and dysfunction. Unlike acupuncture, which is based on traditional Chinese medicine principles, dry needling is a Western musculoskeletal technique grounded in anatomy and neurophysiology. It is used as part of a broader osteopathic treatment plan where clinically appropriate, and is available at all three clinics.
-
An evidence-informed approach means that clinical decisions are guided by the best available research evidence, combined with clinical experience and the individual patient's goals and values. In practice, this means Max draws on current peer-reviewed research in musculoskeletal science and pain neuroscience when assessing your condition and designing your management plan — rather than applying a fixed protocol regardless of your individual presentation.

Yes. Max is a fluent French speaker and offers full osteopathic consultations in French at all three Sydney clinic locations — Bondi Junction, the Sydney CBD, and Leichhardt.
